People Helping People

Wes Faulker has volunteered for the Alzheimer’s Association Washington State Chapter for over ten years. Wes volunteers in memory of his wife Mildred, who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2005.

Wes was drafted to the United States Marine Corps shortly after he and Mildred were married.

Wes and Mildred grew up across the street from each other in Grandview, Washington. “Mildred’s brother married my sister, so to get even, I married her!” Wes recalls, “Our kids are double cousins.” Wes and Mildred raised two daughters, Judy and Cathy.

When Mildred was diagnosed in 1996 their daughter Cathy encouraged Wes to join a support group and he eventually began to volunteer as well. “I was kind of a loner,” says Wes. “I began volunteering for the Association in 2003, doing data entry for Helpline…to have something to do and to have interaction with people.  This is sort of an extension to my family.”

Since then Wes has volunteered in Mildred’s honor and shared more than 9,500 hours of volunteer time.  The Alzheimer’s Association’s work is supported by thousands of volunteers across the country who, like Wes, have had a personal experience with Alzheimer’s disease or are dedicated to our mission. The Association relies on volunteers to lead programs, support groups, advocate and raise funds for research. Volunteers drive the Association.

This year, Wes nominated the Chapter for BECU’s People Helping People Awards and his nomination was selected as one of the winners. BECU will donate $5,000 to the Washington State Chapter in honor of Wes’ work and the Chapter’s service in the community. This award puts the Chapter in the running for another BECU award, the People’s Choice award – and a $15,000 gift to the winning organization! Public voting begins today, Monday, August 24 and ends Saturday, August 29. Click here to vote today and raise more funds to support a world without Alzheimer’s!
